Wells Stone Carving Festival returns this Early May Bank Holiday

Posted on: 08 Apr 2024

Six years after it first launched in the UK’s smallest cathedral city, the Wells Stone Carving Festival is returning to The Bishop’s Barn.

Wells Stone Carving Festival runs from Saturday 4 until Monday 6 May 2024.

Stone carving is an ancient art and talented masons and carvers are responsible for Britain’s most beautiful and revered sculptures. This wonderful event, which returns next month following an immensely successful debut in 2024, will showcase this craft with which the city of Wells has such a strong connection.

Find out more from the festival’s website.

Taking place at The Bishop’s Barn, a medieval tithe barn in the heart of the city, a roster of talented stone carvers from around the UK will spend just three days turning a block of into a piece of sculptural art.

Each artist will be given the same size and type of local stone to produce a free carved piece from their own imagination. Witness the skill and dedication of this unique craft first-hand and try your hand at letter cutting and carving, as well as bidding on the artwork on the final day auction.

This event is a fantastic opportunity to own a unique art piece, crafted by some of the most talented people in their field. Refreshments from local independent food and drink stalls will be available throughout the weekend, alongside a market of local producers and craftspeople and live music.

The artists taking part are Owen Whitfield, Oliver Annaly, Archie Faiers, Roy Martin, Patrick Parker, David Bean, Alex Waddell, Mark McDonnell, Will Davies, Maya Czajkowski, David Davidge, Nick Durnan, Ross Southerington, Jim Holmyard, Tom Clark, Maire-Claire Hamilton, and Katie Hayes.
