A free explosion of art and culture is returning to Stokes Croft next week

The People’s Art Fair, an open group exhibition celebrating artists and creators of all kinds, is returning once again to the People’s Republic of Stokes croft – in just a week!

The People’s Republic of Stokes Croft (or PRSC, for short) are a venerable and beloved institution that are – as you might imagine – the very heart of Stokes Croft, and arguably a beacon of independent culture that inspires the whole city.

Since its inception in 2007, the PRSC has been promoting creativity, culture and the local community throughout Stokes Croft – with a particular focus being resisting gentrification. To serve that aim, the PRSC purchased their headquarters in 2022 and made it a community asset - and founded the Stokes Croft Land Trust to help others do the same.

As part of their fueling of community and creativity, PRSC also host an open group exhibition – called the People’s Art Fair – at the PRSC headquarters. Hosting art from across the spectrum, from paintings, to sculpture, live music and more, this is a truly democratic and accessible art space.

The Spring ‘24 People’s Art Fair is taking place this month, between the 11th and 21st of April, with events jam-packed into the space between as the art is exhibited. Kicking the event off in style is the opening party on the evening of Thursday 11 April – with all the art on show, creative activities to get involved in, and music by electronic soul DJ The Vortex.

Beyond that, the fair will also play host to a turmeric photography workshop and an improv show on the 13th and a drop-in tile decorating workshop on the 14th.

Monday 15 April will see attendees get the chance to co-create a mural to contribute to PRSC’s famous Outdoor Gallery wall – a piece of communal art at the heart of PRSC’s founding! In collaboration with The Bristol Commons, a community-building initiative, you’ll learn about the historical relationship between murals and commons, and help weave a design for the Outdoor Gallery wall – along with mapping, poetry and group drawing workshops.

The exhibition of the People’s Art Fair is free to attend at PRSC headquarters, and events are mostly free or PWYC. For more information on the full lineup of events, including more craft workshops and a maker’s market, head here.
