2023/24 fixtures announced for both Bristol City and Bristol Rovers

2023/24 fixtures announced for both Bristol City and Bristol Rovers

Posted on: 22 Jun 2023

With the eagerly anticipated opening day of the Football League season not much more than a month away, fans from both the North and South of the city are looking towards the new season.

The fixture lists for League One and the Championship have today been published and supporters can begin to make plans for the 2023/24 season.

With this in mind, we’ve taken a brief look at some of the fixtures to look out for in what promises to be an exciting season for both Bristol clubs with fixtures against league newcomers Plymouth Argyle for The Robins and freshly relegated Reading sure to intrigue supporters.

In this feature, we’ve rounded up some of the key fixtures to keep an eye on as well as including full league calendars from both Bristol City and Bristol Rovers.

Bristol City

City fans in the know would have known long before today that they’d kick off the 2023/24 season at home due to the Bristol Baloon Fiesta taking place on the second weekend of the new campaign.

There’s a real sense of positivity this summer despite the seemingly inevitable sale of golden boy Alex Scott to a Premier League club. Following incremental improvements last season and a drastically reduced wage bill, Nigel Pearson’s side have acted quickly in the transfer window, completing the signings of Rob Dickie, Ross McRorie and Hayden Roberts.

The Robins kickstart their 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship season at Ashton Gate with a visit from Preston North End. Saturday 5 August sees The Lilywhites venture to BS3, followed by a trip to The infamous Den to face Millwall on Saturday 12 August.

Two standout fixtures all City fans will be looking out for will be the two Severnside derbies. The first of the season will take place in the Welsh capital on Saturday 28 October and the second at Ashton Gate on Saturday 2 March.

A new season highlight will be an away day at the newly promoted Plymouth Argyle. It’s been a while since The Robins last shared a league with The Pilgrims and, therefore, it’s sure to prove a lively Easter Monday (1 April) when City head to Home Park.

Over the festive period, Pearson’s side will play away at Watford on Boxing Day before hosting Millwall on New Year’s Day. City will then wrap up the 2023/24 season on the road with a visit to Stoke City’s bet365 Stadium on Saturday 4 May. A full fixture list can be found below…

Bristol Rovers

Gas Heads were treated to a real rollercoaster during the 2022/23 campaign with an exciting playoff push followed by a season’s end that saw Joey Barton’s side falter to a lower midtable finish, thus comfortably achieving pre-season expectations.

However, it was certainly a season of excitement with a glut of goals courtesy of attacker Aaron Collins (currently the subject of plenty of transfer speculation) and Middlesbrough loanee Josh Coburn. Barton’s fluid style has drawn plenty of admirers and, if everything clicks on the transfer front this summer, it could well be a thrilling campaign for Rovers fans.

As City are at home, Rovers will begin their League One 2023/24 campaign with a trip to hotly tipped Portsmouth’s Fratton Park on Saturday 5 August. This means their first home game will take place on Saturday 12 August, welcoming potentially managerless Barnsley.

With six new clubs joining Rovers in League One, Gas Heads will be looking forward to a first trip in a while to Reading’s Madejski Stadium on Saturday 9 September. There will also be a renewing of acquaintances with Northampton Town, who Rovers pipped to promotion in 2022, at The Mem on Saturday 28 October.

Rovers’ April run-in sees three home clashes with Shrewsbury Town, Bolton Wanderers and Peterborough United respectively, in addition to a short away trip to Cheltenham Town’s Completely-Suzuki Stadium on Saturday 13 April.

Hopefully, both Bristol clubs will have more to play for on the final day than last season with Rovers finishing their 2023/24 campaign with a long trip to Wigan Athletic on Saturday 27 April. A full fixture list can be found below…

Keep an eye out for our guide to both Bristol City and Bristol Rovers’ 2023/24 seasons later on in the summer.
