Tennis Courts in Bristol

Posted on: 10 May 2023

With summer just around the corner and the sun occasionally making an appearance, it’s time to unearth those whites, restring your tennis racket and make sure you’ve got enough balls.

Whether you’re a tennis veteran looking to join a local club, or you just fancy a quick knockabout, Bristol has a range of tennis clubs and bookable or walk-in courts to choose from. Here is our guide to public tennis courts in Bristol…

Walk-in courts:

If you’re hoping to find a local set of courts for an off-the-cuff knockabout with friends, then you have two options. Firstly, Knowle’s Redcatch Park (pictured below) boasts four free courts in addition to a multi-use games area, two football pitches, public toilets, a jogging route and a children’s play area.

Next up is Horfield Common. With as many as ten free tennis courts, the suburban Common is always open and houses a lovely little community café (The Café on the Common), two play areas, a bowling green, a marked jogging route and a small pond. There are also regular outdoor fitness sessions run by Calon Personal Training.

Bookable tennis courts:

In addition to these free, walk-in courts, Bristol is home to several bookable spots. All these courts cost £5 per session and £35 for an annual membership – book your slot by visiting the Bristol Park Tennis website or by calling 0117 328 6266.

Residents of Eastville will be happy to know that Eastville Park is home to two well-kept courts alongside the Victorian surroundings, a basketball court, football pitches, a running circuit, a bowling green, a fishing lake and two play areas.

Another bookable tennis destination is St George Park, with five courts and a duck pond, a skateboard/BMX park, a bowling green, public toilets, a playground and a café kiosk with an outdoor seating area.

A bit further out of Bristol in Westbury-on-Trym is Canford Park, a sprawling Victorian park featuring as many as five tennis courts, an adventure play park, a bowling green, two bookable football pitches, a café kiosk, a sunken garden and a 600m jogging route.

Other bookable tennis facilities include four indoor courts and ten outdoor courts at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex (call 0117 962 6718 to book) and two full-size and two mini courts at City Academy (call 0117 954 2811 to book).

Tennis clubs and Bristol Tennis League:

If you’re looking for more organised, regular Bristol is home to a range of tennis clubs that welcome players of all ages and abilities with coaching and taster memberships available. Find your local club here.

For those more interested in competitive tennis, the Bristol Tennis League offers the opportunity to play friendly, tennis matches in mixed-sex singles leagues for adults, meeting fellow tennis enthusiasts in the process – entry is £18. Find out more on the league’s website.
