The Room Above announces bumper summer season

Posted on: 01 Jun 2023

The Room Above, the White Bear’s fringe comedy theatre, is bringing a colossal new season of summer comedy to Bristol

The Room Above is one of Bristol’s foremost fringe comedy theatres, operating out of the top room of the newly renovated White Bear – but founded some years before.

With summer coming up, the Room Above have announced a mix of regular features, Edinburgh previews and specials. It’s a heady mix, and could be overwhelming for any eager comedy fan. Not to worry – here’s our highlights:

1. White Bear Comedy Club

Recurring every Wednesday, the WBCC is arguably the heart of The Room Above, bringing the best in Bristol and beyond’s fringe stand-up comedy scene. Hosted by award-winning sketch and stand-up comedian Harry Allmark, this is the best place to start with the Room Above.

2. Adam Flood: Preview

Winner of Bath Festival’s and “one of Stoke-On-Trent’s premium exports”, Adam Flood presents an hour of comedy about reinventing yourself (and a promised autotune pedal), his debut show is heating up for Edinburgh – and he’s giving us an early taste.

3. Honeypot Comedy

The Room Above’s monthly all-female, trans & non-binary comedy night, creating a dedicated space for the best of local non-male comics on the circuit right now.

4. (S)he Who Delights – Alisdair Wallace

Alisdair Wallace brings a deeply personal retelling of the myth of Iphis to life on stage, in a funny and touching tale about the human, the divine, and the leather dungarees.

5. Spencer Jones: Another Work in Progress

Double Edinburgh comedy award nominee and star of sitcom Upstart Crow, as well as creator and star of genius absurd short-form sitcom The Mind of Herbert Clunkerdunk Spencer Jones brings his mix of silliness, music, and self-deprecation to the Room Above

6.Mary O’ Connell: Preview

Star of Stand Up for Live Comedy (BBC Three), Funny Women runner-up 2020, OnlyFans Creative Fund Winner 2023 and creative resident at Steve Coogan's Baby Cow Productions – where do the accolades of “blunt and disturbed” comic Mary O’Connell end? Not with this hotly anticipated show, that’s for sure.

7. Crizards: This Means War

Directed by Edinburgh Comedy Award winner, Jordan Brookes, this wonky war epic is carried along by ‘classic double act’ (The Guardian) Crizards, armed with their gentle bangers to bring it home.

8. Real Positive Poles Present: The Y Files

Totally unscripted X-Files parody from award-winning improv troupe Real Positive Poles – with support from Tales From The Wasteland.

9. Ashley Baker: Preview

Ashley Baker brings his unique perspective on parenting to comedy – with six children, three of which have SEN (Special Educational Needs) diagnoses – Baker presents a stand-up show all about the joys of raising children with special needs.

10. Cambridge Footlights International Tour Show

A royal comedy lineage, the Cambridge Footlights have produced comedy greats from Douglas Adams, to Richard Ayoade, Olivia Colman and more – and the current incarnation are on their international tour! Don’t miss this chance to enjoy an hour of the best sketches of ‘the most renowned sketch troupe of them all’ (The Independent).
