Acclaimed Pakistani artist Arooj Aftab will return to Bristol later this year, armed with her captivating blend of jazz, classical pop, and blues.

 

Arooj Aftab will play Bristol Beacon’s Beacon Hall on Friday 1 November 2024.

Born in Saudi Arabia before spending most of her childhood and her adolescence in Pakistan, Arooj Aftab moved to Boston to study jazz at Berklee College of Music. After graduating, she moved to New York in 2010 to become an editor and film scorer as well as immersing herself in the city’s jazz scene.

 

Throughout the preceding decade, Aftab made her name for herself as one of the scene’s most exciting composers/singer-songwriters. It was in 2021, however, that she perforated the consciousness of a wider audience, delivering “rapturous performances” at major venues and international festivals.

 

Her 2021 single ‘Mohabbat’ made her a global sensation and, in 2022, she was awarded the Grammy for ‘Best Global Music Performance’.  The astonishing scale of Aftab’s musical inheritance is perhaps most noticeable on last year’s Grammy-nominated album, Love in Exile which was co-created with Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily.

 

Aftab’s upcoming album Night Reign (out Friday 31 May) peaks the senses with each composition, each turn of phrase, each modulation and features a plethora of special guests including Moor Mother.

 

As well as Bristol, Arooj Aftab’s Night Reign European tour will see her drop by UK venues in Glasgow, Leeds, Brighton (as part of Mutations Festival) and London (as part of Pitchfork Music Festival) as well as Glastonbury Festival. Full tour details can be found on the artist’s website.
