Legendary post rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor to play Bristol showPosted on: 06 Feb 2024
The enigmatic Montreal collective are known for their stirring combination of avant garde, experimental rock, politically charged spoken word poetry and use of multi-media.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor will play Bristol’s Marble Factory on Wednesday 2 October 2024.
In what is sure to prove a popular event, Godspeed You! Black Emperor will play the BS2 venue as part of a long-awaited tour of the UK and Europe. Devoid of a website and social media account, this will be a rare opportunity for fans to catch one of music’s most idiosyncratic acts live in the flesh.
Godspeed You! Black Empire put out a string of records between 1997 and 2002 that are widely viewed as redefining the genre of protest music through long-form instrumental chamber rock compositions that provoked powerful feelings and serves as a soundtrack to the alienation of late capitalism.
The collective’s first four releases – in particular, F#A#∞ (1997) and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (2000) – are regarded as post-rock classics. Godspeed are renowned for their legendary live shows feature multiple 16mm projectors, beaming a collage of analogue film loops and reels.
This, alongside the band’s distinctive iconography and artwork, furthers their ethos and mysticism. Godspeed have only issued two official band photos throughout their more than 25-year existence, never made a music video, and have conducted only half a dozen written interviews.
Following a seven-year hiatus that began in 2003, Godspeed You! Black Emperor returned to the stage in 2010 to curate the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival and have been together ever since, playing hundreds of sold-out live shows and releasing three additional albums in that time.
In addition to an extensive run of European dates, Godspeed You! Black Emperor will play a limited run of UK and Ireland shows with appearances in Dublin, London, Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol and Coventry.
