Bristol Film Festival collaborate with TEDxBristol for an extra special screening

Posted on: 08 Apr 2024

This Thursday, this ‘Future On Film’ event will see both a screening of the Oscar-winning sci-fi thriller Ex Machina and a fascinating introductory talk.

TEDxBristol’s Future On Film: Ex Machina event will take place at 1532 Bristol on Thursday 11 April 2024.

The first event in an exciting new series combining great films with insightful talks from experts, this week will see Anna Davey-Mitchell – a techno-political researcher at the University of Bristol – talk about the history and future of simulated humans. Do not miss out on this one!

Join Anna for a discussion on how simulated humans are now moving from popular imaginaries (such as literature, plays, film and music) into established human, social and political roles via humanoid and AI robotics.

This intriguing talk will also focus on how films such as this week’s screened offering, Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, can help us consider what the impact of having “citizens that you can buy” will have on humanity.

Almost a decade after it was released, Garland’s Oscar-winning sci-fi favourite feels more relevant than ever. The film follows up-and-coming programmer Caleb who wins a rare opportunity to visit the remote retreat of his boss, tech billionaire Nathan Bateman.

When he’s there, Nathan asks Caleb to test the human qualities of a new form of Artificial Intelligence housed in a realistic human body – but this experiment soon goes horribly wrong. Ex Machina is haunting, stylish and cerebral, and one of the 21st century’s finest sci-fi films.

TEDxBristol’s Future On Film: Ex Machina event will take place at 1532 Bristol on Thursday 11 April 2024 and is the first of a series of collaborative screenings/talks with TEDxBristol. Grab your tickets HERE.

As ever, Bristol Film Festival have a programme jam-packed with legendary movies screened at iconic Bristol locations, from Godzilla (1954) at Redcliffe Caves to Amélie at Averys Wine Cellars. Browse the full lineup on the festival website.
