Be Kind Rewind Bristol organise FREE screenings of cult classic films!

Posted on: 27 Feb 2024

Regularly taking over the basement space of The Ill Repute pub on Old Market, Be Kind Rewind offer a rare chance to catch cinema favourites at a special venue, FREE of charge.

Recent cult classic screenings have included Harmony Korine’s Gummo (1997), René Laloux’s Fantastic Planet (1973), Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard (1950) and more. Optional donations are available to support Be Kind Rewind in making their events accessible for all, so support their efforts if you can.

On Thursday 21 March, Be Kind Rewind presents a ‘Doris Double’ event of two Doris Wishman films, Nude on the Moon (1961) and Bad Girls Go To Hell (1965). A true cinematic pioneer, Wishman worked predominantly in the 60s and 70s, crafting bold and boundary-pushing work often characterised as offensive at the time.

Nude on the Moon (screening at 7.30 PM) follows brilliant scientist Jeff, who inherits a fortune and uses it to build a rocket ship and, alongside the Professor, flies it to the moon, only to discover it is inhabited by telepathic nudists.

Bad Girls Go To Hell (9.30 PM) portrays a nightmarish cycle of violence through dizzying camera work and disembodied voice-overs. This radical film about a young woman’s flight from fate is filled with lacy lingerie, and noir-lit bedsits, all set to a scuzzy New York skyline. Note: this screening is part of a double feature and tickets are for both screenings.

Then, four SOLD OUT screenings take over The Ill Repute basement. First, on Thursday 4 April, is Jim Jarmusch’s star-studded Mystery Train (1989), followed by screenings of iconic British staple Withnail & I (1986) on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 April, and finally – on Mayday – Robin Hardy’s genre-defining cult horror, The Wicker Man (1973).

On Thursday 16 May, film buffs will be treated to a healthy (or unhealthy) dose of disturbing cult horror with Andrzej Zulawski’s Sam Neil and Isabelle Adjani starring Possession (1981). Then, on Thursday 30 May, it’ll be time for Todd Solondz’s dark ensemble comedy Happiness (1998) with Jane Adams, Jared Harris, Philip Seymour Hoffman and more.

Be Kind Rewind have also just announced that Jamie Babbit’s queer classic But I’m A Cheerleader (1999) will screen on Thursday 13 June 2024. The film follows Megan ( a young Natasha Lyonne) who considers herself a typical straight American girl until her parents decide she is gay and send her to a boot camp meant to change her sexual orientation.
