BBC historian David Olusoga to talk at Bristol’s St George’s in September

The BAFTA award-winning filmmaker, broadcaster and author will be in Bristol to present his talk, ‘The State of the British Union, Why Black History Matters’.

 

Professor David Olusoga OBE will appear at St George’s Bristol on Monday 30 September 2024.

 

Following his critically acclaimed BBC documentary series ‘Union’ (now available on BBC iPlayer), the professor will be examining why black history matters as well as the causes of the ‘history wars’ and asks where they might lead us. David Olusoga is a British-Nigerian historian and author of 7 books including Black & British: A Forgotten History (winner of the Longman-History Today Trustees Award and the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize), The World’s War, Black & British A Short Essential History, The Kaiser’s Holocaust: Germany’s Forgotten Genocide and Colonial Roots of Nazism.

 

He is also known as the writer and presenter of long-running BBC series A House Through Time, Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners, The World’s War, The Unwanted: The Secret Windrush Files and landmark BBC arts series Civilizations. Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester, Olusoga is also a seasoned journalist.

 

Olusoga is a recipient of both the British Academy’s President’s Medal as well as the Norton Medlicott Medal For Services to History and is a Fellow of the British Academy, The Royal Society of Literature, The Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Historical Society.

 

‘The State of the British Union, Why Black History Matters’ will see Olusoga examine how history is now front-page news, contested as never before. Statues have fallen and the reputations of great men have been called into question – what can history reveal about contemporary society?

 

With a new publication and television series expected very soon, this unique talk will see David bring his unique insight, passion and knowledge for history to an audience of Bristolians in one of the city’s most beautiful venues.
