The Damned formed in Croydon, London in 1976 after two struggling musicians, guitarist Ray Burns and drummer Chris Millar (now known as Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies respectively) met amongst the fledgling London punk scene.

Early efforts to create a band included future members of punk favourites including The Clash and Generation X. However, the group truly came together with the additions of guitarist Brian James and theatrical frontman Dave Vanian, with Sensible taking over on bass.

The band’s first gig was opening for the Sex Pistols at cult London venue The 100 Club and the four-piece became the first UK punk band to officially release a single with ‘New Rose’ – beating the Sex Pistols’ ‘Anarchy in the UK’ by a matter of weeks.

In 1977, The Damned released their debut album, Damned Damned Damned, and embarked on a UK support slot with T. Rex as well as their own run of dates in the US. The band have changed lineups several times since then with lead singer Vanian remaining the only constant member.

With twelve studio albums and various UK charting singles under their belts, The Damned are undeniable pioneers of the London punk scene, earning a fiercely dedicated fanbase that continues expanding to this day and maintaining a reputation for legendary live shows.

In addition to Bristol, The Damned’s December 2024 tour of the UK will see the band play shows in Newcastle, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds Nottingham, Wolverhampton, Southampton, Eastbourne, Cambridge and London.
