Bristol Old Vic’s festive blockbuster opens next week
Posted on: 17 Nov 2023Featuring a daring heroine, captivating songs and a timeless tale of wonder and hope, the Bristol Old Vic production of Arabian Nights will put a modern spin on the classic story.
Arabian Nights runs at The Bristol Old Vic from Thursday 23 November 2023 to Saturday 6 January 2024.
From the minds of writer Sonali Bhattacharyya (Chasing Hares at the Young Vic) and director Blanche McIntyre (All’s Well That Ends Well at the RSC) comes a fantastic tale overflowing with colourful characters including a seasoned fisherman, a headstrong florist, a cold-hearted king and many others!

Young Schere has the quickest wits, greatest courage and most marvellous stories in all the Kingdom, now she is planning to liberate each and every young woman from the King’s terrible greed and tyranny, all through the power of storytelling. But can she do this alone? And is her best option of help really her annoying younger sister?
As the sisters’ quest becomes more complicated, the sisters must turn to the people of the Kingdom to join their cause. By working together, the unlikely group overcome old grudges and petty disputes to find their collective voice. Together, they light up the Kingdom with magic, excitement, unity and hope in the festive season.
The Arabian Nights cast features Yasemin Özdemir (Angel, UK tour) as Schere, Sara Diab (Play Without a Title, New Diorama) as Dina, Saikat Ahamed (Life of Pi, Wyndhams Theatre), Roxy Faridany (The Beekeeper of Aleppo, UK tour), Nicholas Karimi (Henry VI, RSC), Patrick Osborne (Comedy of Errors, RSC) as Jafar, Ajjaz Awad Eastenders (BBC) as Gulab/Umm and Arinder Sadhra (War Horse, National Theatre) as Rahiq/Zara.
