Wildscreen launch a crowdfund to help Bristol students to connect with nature

Posted on: 06 Oct 2023

This latest crowdfund will aim to help thousands of children in Bristol schools, particularly those from underserved communities, and teachers with the natural world.

Funds raised from ‘Wildscreen ARK: Connecting Kids with Nature’ will support learning resources in classrooms and on the ARK platform, Wildscreen’s free online education hub.

Bristol based leading conservation charity Wildscreen has launched a brand new crowdfund which will help to develop and pilot free and engaging educational resources for classrooms as well as on Wildscreen ARK, which supports learning about nature through footage and images – launching in early 2024.

Wildscreen is looking to hit an initial target of £22,500 with additional funding from the AVIVA Save Our Wild Isles Community Fund and every pound pledged will be matched 2:1. Once this target is hit, the organisation will co-create a series of free learning activities with young people in Bristol.

The pilot would engage 3,000 Bristolian students from underserved communities with nature-focused resources, creating a blueprint for wider UK distribution with the aim of reaching 60,000 young people in two years. It will also develop teachers’ skills in educating students about nature and climate change.

This all comes as 42% of young people said they learn little, hardly anything or nothing about the environment in school, whilst 75% of teachers said they felt they hadn’t received enough training to educate students about the climate emergency according to Teach the Future 2017-2022.

Indeed, since 2013 climate debates have been cut from the national curriculum for children under the age of 14 meaning that this crowdfund will provide a much needed resource that will partly fill the gap for students, helping them to learn and engage with climate change action locally.
