Immerse yourself in the comic genius and cinematic sparkle of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and Buster Keaton at Slapstick’s screen comedy gala. For more than 20 years, Slapstick have been a Bristol institution, lovingly programme the best on screen comedy around the city.
The 2024 Gala will see them continue this proud tradition with screenings of three laugh out loud silent comedy classics, each accompanied with a live score. The films will be introduced by award-winning actor and British icon, Hugh Bonneville (pictured below).
Warming up the headline screening will be the hilarious, zany Laurel and Hardy short, Big Business (1929) and one of Buster Keaton’s most admired and innovative short comedies, the crime caper Cops (1921).
Topping the film bill will be Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush, a tale of love and the American dream. Accompanying the screening will be the 15-piece Bristol Ensemble playing Chaplin’s own score, conducted by Günter A. Buchwald.
To set the mood for the evening, the Shanghai Shuffle jazz band will be playing in Bridgehouse (the foyer space at Bristol Beacon) at 6 PM, providing a speakeasy atmosphere to compliment the 20s movie lineup. Why not dress for the occasion with your own 1920s costume?
