Organisers recently announced the musicians, DJs, spoken word artists, dance acts and workshop artists that will be covering 10 hours of carnival chaos next month.

St Pauls Carnival is set to return to the streets of Bristol on Saturday 1 July 2023.

After 3 long years away, one of Bristol’s best-loved parties is back for a day that promises to be a vibrant fusion of Carnival culture and heritage, complete with all the elements we love so much: a massive procession, booming sound systems, colourful costumes, top musicians, dancers and much more besides.

With this year’s theme being ‘Learning from Legends’, music lovers hoping for a star-studded musical lineup when St Pauls Carnival returns next month will not be disappointed with the event, which regularly attracts tens of thousands of people, featuring four epic stages teaming with talent.

The Carnival’s main stage is the Roy Hackett Memorial Stage, featuring a carefully curated selection of reggae, dub, hip hop, spoken word, afrobeats, UK funk and more in celebration of the Bristol Bus Boycott and civil rights hero the stage is named after.

This year, the stage will feature sets from reggae heavy hitters Horseman & The Uppercut Band, Carnival favourites Talisman, ‘street soul’ stalwarts Laid Blak, energetic local party starter Yemz, bilingual Afrofusian rapper MoYah, Bristol reggae artist Da Fuchaman and his Fire Blaze Band, Club Djembe’s Josephine Gyasi and vocal artist Z Regal.

Next up is the Radical Roots stage; by day, this stage will showcase a blend of activist-led cultural art with a selection of Bristol’s best music, spoken word, dance and more.

The daytime programme will see sets from local legend and poet, educator and activist Lawrence Hoo; musician/spoken word artist Solomon O.B.; Bristol Windrush Reggae Choir; Bristol poet Malizah; local roots reggae 9-piece The Golden Guild and Foli – Bristol Djembe Players.

By night, Radical Roots will be taken over by Booty Bass, a female and non-binary DJ collective serving up big, bad and unapologetic bangers from around the world. Expect DJ sets from Bristol’s very own genre-defying producer and vocalist Grove, local underground favourite NGAIO, Booty Bass resident Bungzo, Hannza, Garoess and Kofo.

Mandela’s Hideaway is the Carnival’s official family and children’s area, showcasing local youth talent, grassroots artists and a range of African and Caribbean creative workshops and providing a safe space for the family.

Expect appearances from Whiske XMP, Lorna Da Angel, Jethro Sheeran, Texxus Redmoney, a Young Bristol’s Got Talent Showcase, Krush Landing and Lucky House Management in addition to arts and crafts, drumming, storytelling, and wooden and sensory play.

Finally, Raising Legends is St Pauls Cathedral’s emerging talent stage presented by Aspiration Creation Elevation, bringing the latest up-and-coming acts to present music lovers with the next-gen of legends.

Raising Legends will feature self-taught Bristol DJ McCoy Sway, multi-genre DJ and Producer DJ Eazy, SWU FM regular DJ Chloe Sage, talent development label BORN2BE Records, and creative arts platform Creative Power Town.

St Pauls Carnival will take place across the streets of St Pauls, Bristol on Saturday 1 July 2023. Find out more on the Carnival website.
