Just 8 weeks until a new show from Neil Gaiman and The National Theatre comes to Bristol

Posted on: 20 Jun 2023

This summer, Bristolian theatre fans will be wowed by The Ocean at the End of the Lane, a five-star fantasy spectacular that is sure to prove immensely popular.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane will run at The Bristol Hippodrome from Tuesday 15 to Saturday 19 August 2023.

From the mind of Neil Gaiman, the best-selling author behind Coraline, Good Omens and The Sandman (all of which have proved hits onscreen), and the producers of War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, this brand-new National Theatre production is a show of real pedigree.

Already a five-star spectacular, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a thrilling adventure complete with fantasy, myth and friendship, taking audiences on an epic journey back to a childhood once forgotten and the darkness lurking at the very edge.

The story follows a man who returns to his childhood home when he finds himself standing at the edge of a pond at the old Sussex farmhouse where he once played. He is then transported to his 12th birthday when his remarkable friend Lettie claimed it wasn’t a pond, but an ocean – somewhere where everything is possible.

Plunged into a world of magic, their survival depends on their ability to reckon with ancient forces that threaten to destroy everything they know. Recommended for theatregoers over the age of 12, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is adapted from Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name.

An award-winning spectacular, the novel won the Best Novel award at the 2013 British National Book Awards while the stage production has achieved four WhatsOnStage and three Olivier Award nominations, winning one for Best Lighting Design.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane drops by Bristol in August as part of a UK tour stop off at theatre venues in Oxford, Milton Keynes, Southampton, Newcastle, Canterbury, Southend, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Norwich, Stoke-on-Trent, Truro, Wolverhampton, Salford and London.
