Monday’s Tony Awards ceremony proved a fruitful occasion for Lolita Chakrabarti and her production of Life of Pi with the stage adaptation winning three of its five nominated categories, namely: Best Scenic Design of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Play.

Based on Yann Martel’s much-loved novel - winner of the Man Booker Prize, selling over fifteen million copies worldwide - is an innovative theatrical adaptation of an epic journey of hope, companionship, and human endurance.

When a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, five survivors are stranded on a lifeboat. These are sixteen-year-old Pi Patel, a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a 450-pound Royal Bengal Tiger. Time and nature are against them, who will survive?

In Chakrabarti’s sensational production, the animals are brought to life by Fin Caldwell, the Puppet and Movement Director behind the National Theatre’s hit show War Horse. The piece made Olivier Awards history when all seven of the performers who puppeteer The Tiger collectively won Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Life of Pi will run at Bristol Hippodrome between Monday 15 and Saturday 20 January 2024. Secure your tickets to the show HERE.
