Tobacco Factory announce women-led summer season for 2023

Posted on: 15 May 2023

Summer is almost upon us and, in this spirit, the much-loved North Street theatre has announced a brand-new season, once more demonstrating the best talent from all over the UK.

Tobacco Factory Theatres have announced three exciting women-led productions - ATC’s ‘Family Tree’, Silent Faces’ ‘Godot Is A Woman’ and Raina Greifa’s ‘Manic’ - across June and July 2023.

Tobacco Factory’s 2023 summer season kicks off with Family Tree between Tuesday 13 and Saturday 17 June. From Actors Touring Company and writer Mojisola Adebayo, this beautiful poetic drama confronts race, health, and the incredible legacy of one of the most influential black women of modern times.

This candid award-winning play paints the portrait of Henrietta Lacks, one of the most astonishing figures in medical history. Her cells form the basis for the most important medical breakthroughs today, however, her cells were taken without her or her family’s permission - the medical establishment exploited her.

Next up, from Wednesday 28 June to Saturday 1 July, is Godot is a Woman. Since Samuel Beckett wrote Waiting for Godot in 1953, he and his estate have notoriously challenged non-male companies performing the piece.

So, Silent Faces have tackled the issue with its trademark style of playful and political physical theatre. The result? A whip-smart interrogation of authorial copyright, gender barriers in art and the cultural significance of Madonna’s Like a Prayer. Samuel Beckett? Thank u… next.

The final production in Tobacco Factory’s summer programme is Raina Griefer’s solo show, MANIC, on Saturday 15 July. When Raina arrives at her spoken word gig to see her exes in attendance, all her questions about past sexual experiences begin to surface.

Through poetry, comedy, and an awkward encounter with a cheese string, she begins to explore questions about bad sex, drunk sex, and the grey areas of consent. Hilarious and heartbreaking all at once, MANIC combines spoken word, puppetry, and theatre to ask if it’s possible to say you were violated without implicating a partner.
