One of musical theatre’s most vibrant and spectacular feats, the production is set to return to Bristol for an unprecedented third time later this month.

 

Disney’s The Lion King runs at The Bristol Hippodrome between Thursday 18 May and Saturday 1 July 2023.

 

Based on Disney’s classic 1994 movie, this multi-award-winning production is back for a multi week run following two previous sold-out stints, the first back in 2019 and the second in March last year.

This groundbreaking production transports audiences to the majestic Serengeti Plains using a blend of striking masks, puppets and costumes, telling the story of the young lion Simba’s adventures as he struggles with the responsibilities of loss, love, growing up and becoming king.

 

Julie Taymor’s internationally renowned stage adaptation of The Lion King launched on Broadway back in 1997. Since then, there have been 25 global productions in 9 different languages including Japanese, German, Korean, French, Mandarin and Spanish.

 

The Lion King previously broke UK attendance records during it's last tour and, since it premiered in 1999, the London production has welcomed over 16 million theatregoers and is the sixth longest-running West End musical.

 

 

The beautiful artistry behind the ritualised puppetry, mask, and movement is presented by a skilled team of designers who drew on a rich range of cultural influences to recreate the colours and vast expanses of the African Savanna.

 

Elton John and Tim Rice have added three fresh numbers to the five they wrote for the film’s award-winning score with additional material from Julie Taymor, Mark Mancina and South African composer Lebo M. 

 

The result is a fusion of popular Western music and the sounds and distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, featuring the Academy Award-winning ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ and the atmospheric ‘Shadowland’.
