Smash-hit musical based on a BAFTA-award winning film is coming to Bristol this month

Posted on: 10 Mar 2023

Five years after a record-breaking run at London’s West End and off the back of a sell-out UK tour, The Commitments is heading back to the stage.

The Commitments will run at The Bristol Hippodrome from Monday 20 to Saturday 25 March 2023.

Based on the BAFTA award-winning film which in turn is adapted from the iconic novel by Booker prize-winning author Roddy Doyle and presented by young Irish director Andrew Linnie, audiences may recognise the character of ‘Da’ as Coronation Street’s Nigel Pivaro.

The Commitments tells the tale of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working-class music fanatic and daydreamer whose ambition is to form the finest soul group Dublin has ever produced. After placing an advert in a music paper, Jimmy sets about auditioning local musicians.

The result of these auditions is a disparate group of weirdos and outcasts: The Commitments. However, as any live musician knows, getting a band together never goes exactly as planned – especially after a few pints of Guinness.

So, strap in for a five-star fantastic, feel-good celebration of the best soul music around. The musical features over twenty soul classics performed live on stage, including: ‘Night Train’, ‘Try A Little Tenderness’, ‘Mountain High’, ‘In The Midnight Hour’, ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’, ‘Mustang Sally’, ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’, and many more.

Thanks to the original novel’s remarkable success and the subsequently Oscar-nominated 1991 film, this loveable tale of the highs and lows of the music industry has become a fan favourite all over the world.

However, The Commitments was almost never published. Author Roddy Doyle and a close friend, John Sutton, initially self-published the book in 1987 thanks to a £5,000 loan from Doyle’s bank manager.

The smash hit stage production of The Commitments will visit Bristol this month as part of a 2023 tour that visits massive theatre venues including The Liverpool Empire, Birmingham Hippodrome, Blackpool Opera House, Manchester Opera House, Leeds Grand Theatre and many others. More information can be found on the production website.

The Commitments will run at The Bristol Hippodrome from Monday 20 to Saturday 25 March 2023. Secure your tickets HERE.
