Posted on: 28 Feb 2023

Waldo’s Circus of Magic & Terror tells a spectacular story of love and resistance, set in a travelling circus in 1930s Germany.

Waldo’s Circus of Magic & Terror runs at Bristol Old Vic from Saturday 11 March to Saturday 1 April.

Presented by Extraordinary Bodies, Bristol Old Vic, and Theatre Royal Plymouth, this brand-new musical will transport Bristol audiences under the twinkling stars of the big top where sensational circus, powerful magic and electrifying music combine to tell a tale of courage, resistance and love.

Tickets are available now HERE.

It’s 1933 in Brandenburg and the Nazis are spreading fear, burning books, and suspending civil rights. Many are desperate to escape, but for Waldo and his circus troupe of outcasts, acrobats and aerialists, the show must go on...

As Hitler’s dictatorship strengthens and oppression grows throughout the country, the daring humanity and courage of these performers are hidden beneath the painted-on glamour of Waldo’s big top. Love, loyalty, and heroism balance on the tightwire as the world outside becomes darker and darker.

Waldo’s Circus is the product of extensive historical research as well as the experiences of real performers. The play is written by Hattie Naylor (Ivan and the Dogs, The Night Watch) and Jamie Beddard (Messiah, The Elephant Man) with a score from Charles Hazlewood (Paraorchestra).

This production is a large-scale collaboration between D/deaf, disabled and non-disabled artists and creators that tours nationally each year. Extraordinary Bodies is the UK’s leading professional, integrated circus company that embraces diverse bodies.

All performances of Waldo’s Circus of Magic & Terror are chilled, signed, captioned and audio described. Chilled performances take a more casual approach to noise and movement in the auditorium with the performance itself unchanged.

Low lights are left on during the show, there will be warnings for loud noises and flashing lights, there will be an online and hard copy ‘visual story’ available explaining the story and audience members will be free to move around during the show.
