Based on the much-loved novel Life of Pi  – winner of the Man Booker Prize, selling over fifteen million copies worldwide – is a breathtakingly fresh theatrical adaptation of an epic journey of hope, companionship and human endurance.

After a cargo ship sinks right in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, there are five survivors stranded on a single lifeboat. They include sixteen-year-old Pi Patel, a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a 450-pound Royal Bengal Tiger. Time and nature are against them and conditions are worsening, who will survive?

These animals become characters within their own right and, in award-winning playwright Lolita Chakrabarti’s extraordinary production, they are brought to life by Puppet and Movement Director Fin Caldwell, the brain behind the National Theatre’s hit show War Horse.

Life of Pi won five Olivier Awards in 2022. In addition to Best New Play and Best Actor for Hiran Abeysekera (Pi), the production made Olivier Awards history with the seven performers who puppeteer the Tiger ‘Richard Parker’ collectively winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The production also picked up awards for set and lighting design.

On the show, Chakrabarti has said: “It has been an extraordinary year in the West End and the success of the play has been both a privilege and a delight - from all the amazing awards to the standing ovations we get every night.

“It is a testament to Yann Martel’s beautiful and moving story. I am so grateful for his trust and generosity in sharing it with me and allowing our amazing creative team to tell his story our way.”

Life of Pi will run at Bristol Hippodrome from Monday 15 until Saturday 20 January 2024. Tickets for the production’s visit to Bristol go on sale tomorrow, Tuesday 6 December so grab yours HERE.
