Here, we’ve taken a look at some of the standout events from the Bristol Old Vic’s 2023 season…

Between Thursday 19 January and Saturday 11 February, international touring company Complicité will present their brand-new work, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of The Dead. This darkly comedic, anarchic noir is based on Nobel Prize-winning author Olga Tokarczuk’s novel of the same name.

In February, The Wardrobe Ensemble’s stage adaptation of Judith Kerr’s beloved story Mog the Forgetful Cat. These timeless tales of feline family and friendship are brought to life to introduce a new generation to the loveable Mog.

Slapstick Sunday (19 February) sees a host of comedy events. Stephen Mangan shares his love for the world’s finest comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy. On the same day, Stephen Merchant will host a brief on-stage chat with Monty Python’s Sir Michael Palin before a screening of Life of Brian. This will be followed by an extended conversation between Sir Michael and popular comedian Rob Brydon.

Running from Friday 24 February until Saturday 4 March, You Bury Me is a coming-of-age story of friendship and loss set in Cairo. Winner of The Women’s Prize for Playwriting in 2020, this is an explosive political piece by first-time writer, Ahlam.

Pride and Prejudice* (*Sort Of) runs throughout May with the West End hit fresh from winning an Olivier Award for Best Comedy. This play is a unique, audacious and wildly funny retelling of Jane Austen’s most iconic tale.

In June, Bristol Old Vic and Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh present a Lesley Hart adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s epic, Anna Karenina. This tale of love, desire, self, society and patriarchal oppression is sure to prove a hit.

For three nights at the end of July, another Judith Kerr story in the shape of David Wood’s musical adaptation of The Tiger Who Came to Tea will take to the stage. Another one direct from the West End, this classic tale of teatime trouble is sure to be full of surprises.

Closing this rundown of the 2023 season from Thursday 31 August until Saturday 2 September is Bristol Old Vic’s retelling of Orpheus & Eurydice. A cast of 100 will take audience members on an epic journey into the underbelly of Bristol in this ancient story of fragility, joy, pain and temptation.

This is by no means a comprehensive rundown of the 2023 season at Bristol Old Vic with a spectacular array of theatre, comedy and dance events scheduled between now and the summer.
