Members of The Pop Group and Sonic Youth to feature in a night of improv at The Cube

Posted on: 27 Sep 2022

Two members of the iconic Bristol post-punk band and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth will be joined by members of Ex Agent, Minor Conflict and Bingo Fury.

This improv supergroup will be at The Cube on Thursday 3 November.

Uttermost Triall #1 will feature alternative music legends from Bristol and further afield together with a number of local artists for a night of improvisation at one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

Tickets for this event go on sale today and can be found here.

Organised by Bristol promoters 1% of One, the night of improvisation features an exciting array of artists from New York rockers to members of Bristol’s underground improv scene.

The most notable name on the lineup is arguably Lee Ranaldo, a co-founder of alternative rock legends Sonic Youth. Ranaldo has since forged a flourishing career as a solo musician, visual and sound artist, writer and producer.

Uttermost Triall #1 will also see Mark Stewart and Gareth Sager of The Pop Group head to the Kingsdown venue. Spearheaded by Stewart, the band formed in Bristol in 1977 through a sense of disillusionment with the increasingly conservative nature of punk.

Known for their radical blend proto-punk, beat, free jazz and noise, The Pop Group’s experimental principles saw them forge a union between post-punk and the avant-garde.

These alternative music titans will be joined by Bristolian post-rock Ex-Agent, whose atmospheric and forward-thinking music is sure to compliment the sonic output of the night’s more senior artists.

Natalie Whiteland of Minor Conflict will also be in attendance with the classically trained harpist offering the perfect complement to the aggressive experimentalism of the other acts.

Finally, local avant-jazz legend Harry ‘Iceman’ Furniss. A staple of Bristol’s burgeoning underground improv scene - through Domestic Soundcupboard, Improv’s Greatest Hits and Iceman Furniss Quartet - and permanent member of Bingo Fury, Furniss will be right in his comfort zone here.

Uttermost Triall #1 is heading to The Cube on Thursday 3 November.

With such an impressive roster of artists taking part and due to the size of the venue, this event is sure to prove a popular one. Tickets can be found here.
