Bristol noise rock mainstays Spectres return to the local live circuit next month

Posted on: 16 Aug 2022

Almost a year since their last Bristol appearance, the renowned live quartet will play a show in the basement of The Crown, presented by 1% of One.

Spectres will play The Crown on Thursday 8 September.

Self-dubbed ‘The Coldplay of the Bristol Noise Scene’, Spectres are ka key component in Bristol’s thriving left-field music community having supported acts such as Giant Swan, Idles, Silver Waves and Oliver Wilde through their DIY collective, Howling Owl Records.

Tickets are currently priced at £6.66 and can be found here.

Made up of vocalist and guitarist Joe Hatt, guitarist Adrian Dutt, bassist Darren Frost and drummer Andy Came, Spectres began putting out music in the early 2010s, quickly demonstrating a penchant for grinding noise and dense distortion layered on top of dark, recognisable pop structures.

This output quickly garnered a great deal of critical acclaim both for the band’s recorded sound and their visceral live shows with comparisons drawn with the likes of noise pioneers My Bloody Valentine and Jesus & Mary Train as well as contemporaries such as Metz and A Place To Bury Strangers.

Through this radical and urgent sound, Spectres have forged a name for themselves as one of the most vital names in the UK noise scene.

See the band brutally dismantle the “genuinely horrific” nature of BBC Radio One and “the tragedy of our times” that is the Live Lounge in the video for 2015’s ‘This Purgatory’ below.

As Howling Owl Records, Hatt and Dutt turned their hands to promoting and putting out records, not only supporting their contemporaries but also bringing a sway of radical artists to play in Bristol.

Some of these exciting appearances include Alex G at The Cube, Jessica Pratt at The Lantern, Show Me The Body at The Crofters Rights, Eartheater at The Cube and - most famously - Girl Band at the Arnolfini.

In September 2021, long-time friends IDLES invited Spectres to join them for one of their biggest shows to date at The Eden Project in Cornwall. Since then, the noise rockers have been quiet with their last Bristol show coming in the shape of a warmup for the IDLES show.

Now, Spectres are back with a special show in the basement of The Crown on Thursday 8 September. Tickets can be found here.

This show is presented by 1% of One, head to the promotion company’s Facebook page to find out what else they have coming up.
