The ultimate feel-good musical, based on the songs of Swedish pop legends ABBA, is making a welcome return to Bristol.

Hit stage musical Mamma Mia! is showing at the city’s biggest theatre venue for a three-week run, beginning on Tuesday 14 June.

Now a massive motion picture and successful sequel starring the likes of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, the long-running musical has been watched by more than 65 million theatre lovers in over 450 cities around the world.

The plot of the show follows Sophie Sheridan and her single mum Donna. After reading her mother’s diary, Sophie invites the three men who could potentially be her biological father to her wedding on a secluded Greek island.

Having debuted in the West End in 1999, Mamma Mia! takes its name from the ABBA song, composed - like all of the musical’s numbers - by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.

As well as ‘Mamma Mia’, ABBA hits such as ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Money, Money, Money’ and ‘The Winner Takes It All’ also feature in the show. The production’s immense success has seen it gross over $4 billion worldwide over the years.

On the show’s remarkable success around the world, one of its creators, Judy Craymer, said: “In a world where everyone’s completely battered by news, it’s nice to feel we’re offering some escapism.”

Theatre-goers can expect stunning choreography, stunning vocals from the likes of Jena Pandya (Sophie) and Sara Poyzer (Donna) as well as rip-roaring comedic moments.

Mamma Mia! is an exhilarating and hilarious tale of love and family that is sure to get adults and children alike off their seats and dancing, as demonstrated by the cast's stunning performance at the Queen's Jubilee over the weekend.

Throughout 2022, the production will enjoy runs at theatres in Glasgow, Sunderland, Bournemouth, Milton Keynes, Brighton, Canterbury, Leicester, Llandudno, Norwich, Sheffield, Belfast, Oxford, Wolverhampton, Manchester, Cardiff, Blackpool, Leeds as well as Bristol.

Mamma Mia! runs at Bristol Hippodrome from Tuesday 14 June till Saturday 2 July, tickets are available from just £13 and can be found here.
