Katy J Pearson releases music video for new single, 'Alligator'

Posted on: 26 May 2022

The visuals, created in collaboration between director/animator Edie Lawrence and Bristol’s Clump Collective, feature a cameo from Paul McGann reprising his character from cult classic Withnail and I.

‘Alligator’ is the third single from the popular Bristol singer-songwriter's upcoming album, Sound of the Morning.

To support the album, which will be released via indie heavyweights Heavenly and produced by Speedy Wunderground chief Dan Carey, Pearson and her band will take to the road in the summer - visiting Bristol's Trinity Centre in September. Find tickets here.

Pearson's latest song is available to listen to now on all the usual music platforms and can be heard here.

Originally from Stroud but now firmly a Bristolian musical treasure, Katy J Pearson has had a remarkable rise of the past few years, soaring from a newcomer on the Bristol scene to a critically acclaimed breakthrough star.

Pearson has garnered a great deal of popularity, selling out shows up and down the UK and receiving a great deal of critical acclaim for her 2020 debut album, Return. Her enchanting blend of Dolly Parton-esque country music and indie folk-pop has cemented her place as one of the UK’s most popular alternative artists.

After announcing her upcoming follow-up record Sound of the Morning in March, Pearson has since released three singles – ‘Talk Over Town’, ‘Game of Cards’ and now ‘Alligator’. Due for release on Friday 8 July, the LP has been described as displaying Pearson’s penchant for experimentation.

‘Alligator’ is a jangly, pulsating track that is driven throughout by a captivating bassline. Speaking about the song, Pearson has said:

“There is this juxtaposition between the lyrics and the soaring chorus which is quite euphoric – it’s quite tongue in cheek and I like that about it. Dan (Carey) played the bass on this track and Yuri from the band Honeyglaze played drums which really gives the track some gusto!”

The accompanying video is a spectacular fever dream set in a nightmarish café, complete with customers eating glass bottles and maniacal laughs. Paul McGann (Doctor Who, Luther, The Three Musketeers) stars in a nod to the well-known café scene in Withnail and I.

Director and animator Edie Lawrence - who has previously worked with Goat Girl, IDLES, Insecure Men and Warmduscher - has created the video in collaboration with Clump Collective – the team behind works for the likes of Bingo Fury, Divorce and previous Katy J Pearson videos.

Sound of the Morning will be released on Friday 8 July and Katy J Pearson will visit Bristol’s Trinity Centre on Thursday 8 September, visit the event page for tickets.

She will also appear at Bristol Sounds 2022, supporting Swedish indie folk duo First Aid Kit.
