Afrobeat pioneer Dele Sosimi to return to Bristol with Old Market Assembly show

Posted on: 16 May 2022

The celebrated multi-instrumentalist will be bringing his live Quintet to Old Market this week.

Tickets are running low for Afrobeat originator Dele Sosimi's latest Bristol show, set to take place at atmospheric BS2 venue The Old Market Assembly this Friday 20 May.

Combining traditional African percussion with jazz-inspired solos and trademark vocals, the Dele Sosimi Quintet personify the joy and vibrancy of music, having performed together in front of eager audiences across the globe.

Having toured extensively alongside the iconic Fela Kuti during the 1970s and 80s, Dele Sosimi has carved out a stellar reputation for himself both within the Afrobeat community and among artists and music lovers worldwide.

The multi-award-winning artist has been flying the flag for Afrobeat in the UK since 1995, and his gripping live performances perfectly showcase his vision of the genre, faithful to its roots but laced with his own musical DNA.

The music blends complex but energetic funk sounds with traditional Nigerian music, African percussion, jazz horns and solos, and deftly rhythmic singing.

Sosimi performs in one of three formats - a 15-piece Afrobeat Orchestra, a six-to-nine piece band, or a trio, quartet or quintet arrangement.

This time around, the Dele Sosimi Quintet will be supported by Nigerian, Bristol-based DJ & Producer Folu, known for his eccentric tropical beats and afrobeat remixes.

Folu is a Nigerian Bristol-based DJ/Producer making eccentric, experimental tropical beats and afrobeat remixes.

Tickets for the one-off Bristol show, taking place at The Old Market Assembly, are on sale now and can be found here.
