Breaking Bread pop-up to close in November

Breaking Bread pop-up to close in November

Posted on: 23 Oct 2020

Bookings are open for the final sittings at the popular restaurant and bar complex.

The team behind Breaking Bread have confirmed they'll be ending their first season in November, closing the curtain on a hugely successful opening three months.

Launched at the end of July in response to the coronavirus crisis, the pop-up restaurant-bar saw some of Bristol's best-loved independents set up shop on The Downs, treating visitors to delicious seasonal menus and a string of live performances.

Now, with the winter weather about to set in and a growing risk to staff and visitors amid a potential second wave of the pandemic, the Breaking Bread team have confirmed Sunday 8 November as the final day for bookings.

Reservations up to and including the final sittings are open now and can be found here.

A hit with food fans across Bristol, Breaking Bread has been heralded as a rare but meaningful positive to be taken from a difficult year in 2020.

The pop-up, run by local chef Josh Eggleton alongside Team Love, Pasta Loco and The Pipe & Slippers, has hosted kitchen takeovers from an array of renowned Bristol independents, from Root to Woky Ko, Gambas Tapas and Popti & Beast.

Breaking Bread's bar venue, The Pipe & Lovers, has also been running its own vibrant food menu throughout, alongside a selection of top-notch drinks served by staff from The Pipe & Slippers and The Love Inn.

As well as the food and drinks on offer, the pop-up has hosted a string of sell-out live performances and DJ sets, welcoming local crews including Worm Disco Club and Friendly Records, and running weekly live jazz and comedy nights.

The project has provided work and opportunities for hundreds of events and hospitality professionals in Bristol, at a time when lockdown and other government coronavirus measures have had a huge impact on both industries.

Revealing the news of their closing across their social media channels, the Breaking Bread team said: "2020 has been somewhat of a rollercoaster for all of us, one that we hope never to have to ride again in this lifetime!

"Breaking Bread has been one of the few positives for our event teams and organisations this year thanks to the amazing support that Bristol has shown us - it has really given us a huge amount of optimism for the future.

"Your support has directly employed over 100 people across the project, as well as hundreds more across our supply chains and producers. It really has been a lifeline for many of us.

"We're excited to say that we are making plans to return in 2021 and hope very much to build upon the offering from this year and the fantastic experience we have had."

For now, however, there's still plenty more to come from Breaking Bread on The Downs, including DJ sets from Daisy Moon and Chris Farrell (Friday 23 October), a Halloween Pub Quiz (Tuesday 27) and live jazz courtesy of the Wrigglerz Quartet (Thursday 29).
