How music venues in Bristol are responding to coronavirus

Posted on: 23 Apr 2020

Here’s how some of Bristol’s live music venues are responding to COVID-19.

It’s a difficult time for Bristol’s events and entertainment industry.

The banning of mass gatherings has meant pubs, clubs and live music spaces are closed for the time being.

But that doesn’t mean the staff of Bristol’s live music venues aren’t working behind the scenes.

Here’s a roundup of the nifty ways in which Bristol’s music spaces are tackling, and coping with, the obstacles posed by pandemic.

We’re talking podcasts, playlists and beer deliveries.

Thekla

The floating music venue and former German cargo ship has launched a brand-new podcast, titled ‘Isolation Discs.’

Every week, a different artist chats (remotely) with Isolation Discs host, Chris Arnold.

Since its launch, the podcast has featured Bristol MC Gardna and Dev, the bassist of IDLES.

Lakota

This week, Lakota has launched a new series on Soundcloud: 'The Residents.'

A celebration of their warm-up acts, the new series shines a light on the club’s resident DJs and selectors.

Alongside that, Lakota has launched a community video compilation project.

They’ve asked the people of Bristol to record themselves describing, in a few words, why Bristol is the best. It’ll be released soon, so keep an eye out.

The Louisiana

A few weeks back, we spoke with The Louisiana’s Artist Booker, Lor, about what she’s been listening to in lockdown.

She shared her aptly-named playlist with us, and chatted about what The Louisiana team have been up to.

Every day, the family-run venue has invited musicians to take over its Instagram feed. See who’s live-blogging today here.

Motion

Bristol’s monster club, Motion, has been throwing it back across their social media accounts, with pictures of their favourite past events.

And yesterday (22 April), the club launched a new Spotify playlist, #StaffSelects.

It’s a playlist full of artists Motion has got coming up, and the tunes club staff are currently digging.

The Gryphon

Bristol’s heavy metal and real ale pub, The Gryphon, has launched a beer delivery service.

They're delivering in the local area, and they're stocking beers from all over: Estonia, Leeds and of course, Bristol.

See the full list over on The Grpyhon's Facebook page.

Trinity Centre

The historic community arts space has broadcasted selected #TrinityPresents shows online.

Previous broadcasts are available to watch via Trinity’s official Facebook page.

They’ve also been sharing their Track of the Day via Twitter. See what they’ve been spinning today right here.

The Gallimaufry

Earlier this week, James Koch, the co-owner of the Gloucester Road jazz hub, has shared his lockdown playlist with 365Bristol.

As well as updating his Bristol Lockdown Radio, Koch has been sharing photography on the venue’s social media channels.

Here’s James’ portrait of Jeff, a familiar, friendly face of Stokes Croft.

The Fleece

The Fleece’s former bar manager, Thomas Barter, has created a poignant animated video: An Imagined Letter From COVID-19 To Humans. Watch:

The Crown & The Trap

Whilst The Crown’s doors remain closed, their very own craft beer and pizza bar, Beerd, is operating a takeaway service. Find out more here.

Cloak & Dagger

At the moment, C&D is open for takeaway and delivery – and their Sunday Roasts are proving a hit.
