Sunday Roasts in Bristol: 5 of our Favourites

Posted on: 17 Nov 2019

Bristolians aren't exactly short of options when it comes to a Sunday Roast, but how do you decide where to go?

Having rated the roasties and gauged the gravy at some of the city's best-loved spots over the last few years, here we bring you a quick rundown of five of our absolute favourites.

Disclaimer: This is by no means an ultimate guide to roast dinners in Bristol, and they're in no particular order. We're well aware that we'll have missed some of the best (i.e. the universally-loved and permanently booked-up Bank Tavern) as well as a few hidden gems here, so hold tight for a full list in the near future.

Perched halfway up a steep hill above Hotwells sits The Lion, purveyor of one of the best all-round roast dinners you'll find in Bristol. You'll need to book a table in advance here to enjoy one of five indulgent and lovingly-prepared dishes, including rare Welsh black beef and buttered chicken.

Two types of potatoes - traditional roasties and Dauphinoise - get two huge thumbs up from us, accompanied on every plate by a fancy selection of trimmings including braised red cabbage and Cavolo Nero.

The Lazy Dog | 112 Ashley Down Rd, Bristol BS7 9JR

Not just a firm 365Bristol favourite when it comes to a Sunday roast, The Lazy Dog is one of our favourite Bristol pubs. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the food is great.

Choose from a succulent, 28-day aged rump of beef, slow-roasted pork belly, Westcountry lamb shoulder, an unbelievable veggie Wellington or their roasted aubergine vegan option, clear your plate, undo that top button and settle in for a near-perfect Sunday afternoon at an Ashley Down institution.

The Pipe & Slippers | 118 Cheltenham Rd, Bristol BS6 5RW

For the thousands of people that party in and around Stokes Croft every weekend and contribute to the measured madness of the area on a Friday or Saturday night, The Pipe & Slippers offers the chance to return to the scene of the crime on Sunday afternoon after the dust has settled.

If you arrive in good time you shouldn't have to book in advance, but the small-ish pub gets pretty full pretty quickly as locals queue up to sample their stellar range of Sunday roasts. You may end up waiting a while, but it's worth it to try one of several dishes lovingly prepared by chef Tucha.

The Volunteer Tavern | 9 New St, Bristol BS2 9DX

How can you argue with a Sunday roast for a tenner? The Volunteer Tavern, located a stone's throw away from Cabot Circus, is a fantastic local pub that offers top-notch roast dinner every Sunday afternoon.

The bar doesn't take bookings, so we can't guarantee you a seat at the table, but we do thoroughly recommend trying your luck. Choose from chicken, beef or veggie and vegan options, all served with delicious seasonal veg, roasties, a Yorkshire and your choice of gravy. For just a tenner!

The Cloak & Dagger | 182-184 Cheltenham Rd, Bristol BS6 5RB

The newest addition to Cheltenham Road and an exciting prospect given its expansive space, The Cloak & Dagger recently put together a Sunday roast menu that offers up major portion sizes without skimping on flavour.

Their 'Pimp My Cauli' cauliflower cheese side dish - packed with three types of cheese, roasted butternut squash and chopped hazelnuts - stood out for us when we put the new menu to the test recently, and the locally sourced ingredients coupled with a cosy atmosphere make this one a must-visit for anyone in the area.
