There's a flurry of Welsh National Opera coming to Bristol this week

Posted on: 22 Apr 2024

This week, the Welsh National Opera is bringing the stage of the Hippodrome to life with three sensational shows that promise to captivate audiences like never before.

Opera may be seen as the reserve of an elitist few, but they’re an expressive art form that can appeal to all, regardless of your background with entertainment – and Welsh National Opera are clearly here to prove that even if you’re more into X-Men than The Yeoman of the Guard, there’s something for you on the stage this month.

For those craving pure operatic delight, the Welsh National Opera will kick things off with an unforgettable concert on Thursday 25 January, featuring some of the genre's most beloved pieces. They’ve assembled their own X-Men-like own team of operatic heroes, with each aria and orchestral piece showcasing its unique power and flair. From Mozart to Verdi, Puccini to Britten, this evening promises a rich tapestry of musical magic that will leave you spellbound.

To audience delight, on Friday 26 January is Mozart's timeless comic opera, Così fan tutte, or 'Women Are Like That' (aka The School for Lovers), directed by the talented Max Hoehn. Transporting us back to the groovy era of the early 1970s (not unlike X-Men: Days of Future Past) where love is as complicated as it is exhilarating. Picture Love Island’s Casa Amor - with sixth formers caught in a web of temptation and deception, all set to Mozart's magnificent music. Sung in Italian with English subtitles, it's a coming-of-age tale that's as amusing as it is enlightening.

Finally, on Saturday 27 January is Benjamin Britten's "Death in Venice", a dark and atmospheric journey into obsession and desire. Based on Thomas Mann's novella, this opera follows the renowned author Gustav von Aschenbach as he falls under the Professor X-like mental thrall of a youthful aristocrat amidst the backdrop of a cholera epidemic in Venice. With Britten's dramatic score underscoring every twist and turn, this production promises to be both mesmerizing and thought-provoking, sung in English with English subtitles.

Welsh National Opera will be running their shows from 25-27 April, this week, at the Bristol Hippodrome. You can get tickets for Così fan tutte here, Death in Venice here, and the Opera Favourites show here.
