Mother’s Day 2024 is just around the corner (that’s right, it’s Sunday 10 March for those who have forgotten) and, whether you’re celebrating your mum, step-mum, or mother-in-law, you want to treat her right!

 

With the weather looking a bit dismal this weekend, we thought we’d compile a list of cosy cafes around Bristol that serve the best brunches, coffees and cakes…

 

The Nectar House | 169A Gloucester Road, Bishopston, BS7 8BE

 

Our list begins on Gloucester Road with The Nectar House, a truly unique café that is pollinator-friendly and aims to raise awareness for and improve the plight of bees. This cosy little venue boasts a hidden garden as well as excellent coffee and bites ranging from veggie breakfasts to smoked salmon on toast supplied by The Fish Shop.

The Crafty Egg, Fishponds | 780 Fishponds Road, BS16 3TT

 

The Crafty Egg is something of a Bristol institution with venues in Stokes Croft and the newer Fishponds site. This warm and modern café provides a delicious brunch menu featuring such favourites as kimchi braised mushrooms, Afghan baked eggs and ‘The Vegan Crafty’ and a welcoming family atmosphere.

The Bristolian | 2 Picton Street, Montpelier, BS6 5QA

 

This vibrant independent, tucked away just off the bustling Stokes Croft, serves a range of breakfast and lunch meals with a variety of teas, coffees, smoothies, cakes – and cocktails! The Bristolian prides itself for a menu that includes vegetarian, vegan, meat and gluten-free options available, and ingredients sourced from local suppliers.

Garden of Easton | 89 St Marks Road, Easton, BS5 6HY

 

Over to East Bristol now and the plant-filled, rustic destination that is Garden of Easton, a community space and bar as well as a café, breakfast and lunch (walk-ins only) is served from 10 AM until 4 PM with a brunch menu that boasts grilled morcilla & chorizo, savoury Japanese pancake, Belgian waffles and more.

The Bristol Loaf | 96 Bedminster Parade, Bedminster, BS3 4HL

 

Moving to South Bristol now and The Bristol Loaf, an artisan bakery that also has sites in Redfield and in the Bristol Beacon. The staple independent produces handcrafted, organic breads, savouries, pastries and cakes using local and ethically sourced ingredients in addition to delicious coffee served by trained Oddkin Bristol baristas.

Mud Dock Café | 40 The Grove, Bristol Harbourside, BS1 4RD

 

What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than a leisurely walk around the docks, followed by a lazy brunch with unrivalled views at Mud Dock? The bountiful brunch menu features classic menus, buttermilk pancakes, eggs, granola, kedgeree, shakshuka and a whole lot more.

Yafo | 238 North Street, Southville, BS3 1JD

 

Yafo is one of the latest additions to the foodies’ paradise that is North Street, serving truly authentic falafel made on-site with care, experience, and authenticity. This popular eatery offers hot drinks, smoothies and milkshakes alongside their Shuk menu, salad boxes and humus plates – a bit of Middle Eastern flavour amongst all the classic cafes.

Windmill Hill City Farm Cafe | Philip Street, Bedminster, BS3 4EA

 

Why not take a stroll around Windmill Hill City Farm before having a bite to eat at the café? Only serving meat when their own farm-reared produce is available, enjoy a constantly changing menu of homemade cakes (including their legendary carrot cake), Wogan’s coffee, breakfasts, sandwiches, and salads.

Dareshack | Vintry Building, Wine Street, BS1 2BD

 

Perfectly located for a Sunday stroll around the Centre, Dareshack is a versatile café, music venue and restaurant sitting just opposite Castle Park. With real care for the craft of brewing coffee, this is a modern space that also offers homemade cakes, alcoholic beverages and – a 365Bristol favourite – delicious croissant sandwiches.

Café Revival | 56 Corn Street, BS1 1 JG

 

It would be rude not to include Bristol’s oldest coffee house in this list of cafés. This rustic three-storey venue has been a coffee house for over 200 years and serves all-day global bites including ‘almost full English breakfast’, smashed avocado, Belgian waffles, buttermilk pancakes, porridge and more.

No 12 Easton | 12 High Street, Easton, BS5 6DL

 

Boasting some of the best coffee in Bristol and a cosy, family-friendly atmosphere, our penultimate pick is No 12 Easton. This popular joint serves up scrumptious sourdough toasties, cakes, sausage rolls and other savouries – all made in-house – as well as selling a wonderful selection of wines.

FED | 4-6 Abbotsford Road, Cotham, BS6 6HB

 

With three locations across Gloucester Road, Cotham and Fishponds, FED are one of the big players when it comes to Bristol cafes. First opening in 2018, their menu boasts a range of morning bakes (think cinnamon buns and croissants), healthy breakfast options, vibrant seasonal salads, savoury tarts and pasties and gorgeous cakes.
