Full programme of artists announced for Bristol New Music 2024

The fifth edition of this city-wide festival of contemporary music and sound once again promises to be an adventurous, sonic exploration of the city of Bristol.

 

Bristol New Music will run across multiple Bristol venues between Thursday 25 and Sunday 28 April 2024.

 

Artists from every corner of contemporary music and sound – whether that be major international artists or homegrown talent – will gather in one of the country’s most creative cities in April. For four action packed days, Bristol will be abuzz with new forward-thinking music, landmark concert hall performances and club nights.

Friday 26 April (7.15 PM to 10 PM) will provide a rare opportunity to catch the unmissable Klein, live at Bristol Beacon’s Lantern Hall with support from Aho Ssan performing recent album Rhizomes, and – opening - Dali de Saint Paul, Maxwell Sterling, Rebecca Salvadori and Charlie Hope with new audio-visual performance, dubbed ‘Penumbra’.

 

Also on Friday 26 April (10.15 PM – 12.30 AM), Ryoji Ikeda will take over Beacon Hall with this latest live show reworks from his pulsating 2022 project, ultratronics. Some of his most dancefloor-friendly, prepare for a razor-sharp sensory overload. The event will also feature a special appearance from distinctive US producer and composer, Jlin.

 

 

The Saturday 27 April daytime programme will see Bristol University Fringe at The Cube (12 PM – 1.15 PM), providing a grassroots-inspired concert with music written in response to arts defunding in the UK. At The Crypt of St John At The Wall (12 PM – 6 PM), Kathy Hinde will reimagine Antoine Brumel’s intricate choral piece, ‘Earthquake Mass’.

 

The evening programme will begin with an immersive, ceremonial show by singer and composer Keeley Forsyth at Lantern Hall (6 PM – 7 PM). St George’s will see Apartment House present a new transcription of Nico and John Cale’s 1968 album, The Marble Interest + support (7.45 PM – 10.45 PM).

 

Then, after a cast of special guests on the front stage at Strange Brew will host bass/noise Daddy, The Bug in the back room for an extended ‘In Dub’ DJ set – using his recent Machine EP series as a jump-off point (9 PM – 3 AM).

 

 

Sunday 28 April will once more begin with Kathy Hinde’s ‘Earthquake Mass Reimagined’ at The Crypt of St John At The Wall (12 PM – 6 PM). Then, at Victoria Room, East Asian/Bristol ensemble Shui Mo will make their debut, interpreting five premieres from Bristol composers (1.15 PM – 2.30 PM).

 

At The Cube, Qwak Club will present sets from Polish guitarist, composer, performer, improviser and music folklore expert Raphael Rogi?ski, Irish viola player Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh and London-based artist Genghis Cohn (3 PM – 6 PM).

 

That evening (6.15 – 8.15), double bass composer Sebastian Gramss plays the UK premiere of ‘Atopie’ before headliners and world-leading new music group Quatour Bozzini, back after 10 years, hit Victoria Rooms. The festival then culminates with formidable quartet ???? [Ahmed], baroque-ambient artist Josephine Foster and Ruth Goller’s Skylla at Strange Brew (8.30 PM – 11.30 PM).
