Beloved Bristol post-punks tackle industry queerbaiting in new single

Posted on: 14 Feb 2024

Knives, a Bristolian post-punk outfit playing Outer Town this April, have released their new single – and it doesn’t shy away from hard topics.

Knives are a bold, pop-infused post-punk band from Bristol that are swiftly growing in prestige around the UK circuit. With an impressive response to their debut EP Newshounds & their bombastic cover of Kate Bush’s Babooshka, Knives’ fresh and raw energy has seen them play a sell-out show at Rough Trade, as well as perform at shows supporting flagship punks like Enola Gay & Tokky Horror.

Now, Knives are announcing their new single – Doppelganger. Doppelganger is proudly outspoken against the persistent issue of homophobia in the music industry, and the hypocritical ‘queerbaiting’ that the industry often seemingly engages in.

Of the single, drummer Erin Cook said “There are multiple instances of artists capitalising off of the queer community, while simultaneously fans only accepting queer icons if they’re deemed as ‘good enough’. In addition, on a more personal level, we’ve had experiences with people that preach about LGBTQ+ rights, yet also spout casual homophobia.”

Doppelganger is just a taster of what’s to come though – it’s the first track released of Knives’ upcoming EP, What We See In Their Eyes. Continuing the example of Doppelganger, the new EP will tackle the people in Bristol that they see as letting down the friendly reputation of their home city – inviting listeners to consider confrontation and unspoken words.

If you want to see Knives live, they’ll be making an appearance as part of the Outer Town festival on Saturday, April 13. If you’re interested in Old Market’s Outer Town festival, you can find out more and get tickets here.

Knives’ new single, Doppelganger, will be released this Friday, February 16th. To keep up with the band, follow them on social media.
