It's fair to say that the excitement of Christmas and New Year has well and truly subsided and it's time to fully embrace the New Year.

 

Like this writer, you may already be faltering slightly on your 2024 fitness goals, so what better way to get back on track than booking in an athletic challenge this year?

 

To get you going, we’ve compiled a handy list of runs and athletic events happening in and around Bristol this year, with avid sprinters, occasional joggers and running rookies alike all welcome.

 

Find out when and where an event is taking place, sign up and get training! After all, it takes just eight to ten weeks for a beginner to train for a 10k…

 

The Bristol 5k and 10k Winter Warmer Run @ Ashton Court Estate | Sunday 11 February 2024

 

Taking place amid the picturesque surroundings of Ashton Court and raising money for the homelessness charity Shelter, the Winter Warmer Run gives you a chance to lace up your shoes and motivate you to put your January training to the test!

 

The event features various entry benefits including full race chip timing, a super cool medal, snacks, drinks, surprise goodies and buckets full of fun, smiles and support along the way! Entry for both runs are priced at £22.

The Winter Green Man Ultra @ Ashton Park School (45 miles)/The Lock Keepers, Keynsham (30 miles) | Saturday 2 March 2024

 

Returning once again, this popular event comes in two formats – 45 miles and 30 miles – with both races held on the same course on the same day. The 45 run is a full anti-clockwise loop of the Community Forest Path, while the 30 run (affectionately known as The Green Boy) is a partial loop of the same track.

 

This is a heavy-duty run with a mandatory kit list, various checkpoints and water stations. Please visit the event website for details.

AJ Bell Great Bristol Run @ Millennium Square | Sunday 19 May 2024

 

Each year, this immensely popular event sees thousands of runners push their perseverance and passion to the limit on two super scenic routes around Bristol. With stunning views of the historic harbourside and thought-provoking graffiti, runners on both the 10k and half marathon will have plenty to take in before a grandstand finish in Millennium Square.

 

This fun and flat course is perfect for those hunting for a new personal best – or just looking for a challenge! Half marathon tickets are priced at £44 and 10k at £34.

Bristol Triathlon @ Cumberland Basin | Sunday 2 June 2024

 

Are you interested in a little bit more than your average run? Are you a keen cyclist and swimmer as well as a runner? Join this brilliant Triathlon right in the heart of Bristol. Set in the historic Bristol Harbourside, this is both a test of endurance and a day to remember.

 

Cross the finish line and take in your achievement with a hard-earned finisher’s medal!

Cheddar Gorge Challenge @ Warren Farm, Charterhouse | Sunday 11 June 2024

 

Moving slightly further afield now, the Cheddar Gorge Challenge incorporates five separate races (Fun Runs, 6km, 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon) all across one day! Runners can take in some of the most beautiful and remarkable landscapes of any run in the country.

 

Marvel at the gorge cliff top path looking down at the open Somerset Meadows, the historic Mendip Hills which include signs of Roman mining and World War II bunkers, and Beacon Batch - the highest point of the Mendips.

Bristol Race For Life events @ The Downs | Saturday 22 & Sunday 23 June 2024

 

Part of Cancer Research UK's Race for Life initiative, these events are open to runners of all abilities and ages with children and adults alike catered for. The classic 5k and 10k events will take place on Sunday with no pressure to finish at a certain time and plenty of cheering points along the route!

 

However, if you’re looking for something a little different, why not try out the ‘Pretty Muddy’ Saturday event? Split into a kids course and an adult 5k, this event will see you climb, crawl and slide your way around the course at your own pace. Get muddy as an individual or with friends and family, all whilst raising money for a good cause!
