Prepare for five days of side-splitting slapstick comedy across Bristol next month

Posted on: 12 Jan 2024

Welcoming an incredible roster of silent and classic screen comedy and an impressive line-up of celebrity guests, the Slapstick Festival is a must-attend event in Bristol’s cultural calendar.

Slapstick Festival runs across multiple Bristol venues from Wednesday 14 until Sunday 18 February 2024.

With events taking place at Bristol Beacon, Watershed and Bristol Old Vic, the festival exists to introduce new audiences to silent and visual on-screen comedy by showcasing and celebrating archive comedy predominately from film’s silent era (1895-1930) with live and online events.

Slapstick’s 2024 line-up of special guests is brimming with exceptional comedy talent including the likes of Sir Michael Palin, Samira Ahmed, Hugh Bonneville, Harry Hill, Sylvester McCoy, Robin Ince, Tim Vine, Christina Newland, and Lucy Porter to name but a few.

Music will, once more, be at the forefront of the festival’s programme, accompanying classic 20s flicks from the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, Beatrice Lillie and more as well as various spoof and wacky horror flicks starring scare stars such as Lon Chaney Jnr.

This year, the festival Gala will be making a grand return to the newly reopened Bristol Beacon with regional premieres of films from Harry Hill and Tim Vine, a look back at legendary sitcoms, a reassessment of the political clout of The Goodies and a whole lot more.

Other programme highlights include Paddington star Hugh Bonneville hosting the Gala, Sir Michael Palin and Robert Palin revisiting Alan Bleasdale’s political comedy G.B.H, a collection of horror shorts dubbed ‘Spooktacular’, a Tardis-style retrospective with sci-fi and fantasy Sylvester McCoy and plenty more.

Slapstick Festival will run across four Bristol venues from Wednesday 14 to Sunday 18 February 2024. Full details of the Slapstick 2024 programme and booking options are available on the festival’s website.
