A New Year with the Room Above

A New Year with the Room Above

Posted on: 02 Jan 2024

The Room Above, Bristol’s best-kept comedy secret, have been steadily upping their game day-in, day-out, consistently providing bigger and better programmes of bright-eyed fringe comedy each season.

So, it’s no surprise that, with 2024 looming over us, the team at the RA (no, not that RA, but one I’d rather visit) have a bumper crop of comedy of all shapes and sizes lined up to help us laugh away the chillingly rapid march of time. Join us for a quick preview of some of the most exciting shows coming out the Room Above in 2024.

Amy Weber: No Previous Experience - 26th January

Award-winning musical comedian Amy Weber is bringing her solo show to the Room Above in January. “Armed with her mini keyboard and an opera degree that’s never been useful”, Weber is a wildly popular rising star who won the Audience Choice award at the Musical Comedy Awards and Best Comedy at the Manchester Fringe – as well as being nominated for plenty more.

Ted Hill: 110 Percent Ted Hill - 4th February

Comedy and PowerPoint? Not usually considered a match made in heaven, but ‘weird little PowerPoint boy’ Ted Hill seems to make it work so well that Mark Watson described him as “a real delight” and “loads of fun”.

Join Ted for comedy, graphs, live science demonstrations, live geese(allegedly) and magic!

Adam Flood: Remoulded - 7th March

I had the pleasure of reviewing Flood’s WIP version of this now-finalised show, and can’t recommend it enough. Even if you don’t take my word for it, The Times placed Flood in their Top 3 Rising Stars of the Fringe, he was featured in the British Comedy Guide’s Top Picks of The Fringe – and he was the winner of Bath Festival’s New Comedian award last year.

Funny, at times vulnerable, and also full of messing about with an autotune pedal. Give it a watch.

Horatio Gould: Sweet Prince - 28th March

TikTok (and it’s various trickle-down imitators) can sometimes seem like it’s full of lowest-denominator, lazy comedy, but there are some great comedians on there using the format to their advantage to create some inventive, original and funny stuff – Horatio Gould is one of them.

But there’s more to Gould than 50 million views online – his standup is getting regular praise around the country, with kudos from comedians like Frankie Boyle (“the funniest, freshest act out there”), Seann Walsh (“will be this country’s Judd Apatow”) and Fin Taylor (“the most exciting comedic mind this country’s seen since Chris Morris”).

Ben Miller: Volcano WIP – 17th May

Ben Miller is a scientist-turned-comedian who was, this year, artist in residence for Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, the first comedian ever selected for the role.

If your like your comedy molten-hot with a side of educational interest, Volcano is likely the show to check out – armed with his degree in Materials Science and Engineering, and the accolade of once being ranked as the top roast battler in NYC, he’ll make you laugh, and just maybe learn too.

Recurring Nights

As usual, the Room Above will also continue with their regularly scheduled nights. That includes the weekly White Bear Comedy Club, which has both a professional and a pay-what-you-want night with less established talent, Bristol Comedy Room (hosted by local comics Burt Williamson and Greg Winfield), and Honeypot Comedy, a monthly all female, trans and non-binary comedy night celebrating the best non-male voices in UK comedy.
