Posted on: 29 Dec 2023

Once the festive period is over and the new year is well and truly underway it’ll be time for The Bristol Hippodrome’s 2024 season – including the multi-award-winning stage version of Life of Pi.

Life of Pi will run at The Bristol Hippodrome from Monday 15 until Saturday 20 January 2024.

Based on the global phenomenon and winner of the Man Booker Prize, selling more than fifteen million copies worldwide and being turned into a major Hollywood movie, Lolita Chakrabarti’s Life of Pi is the acclaimed and wildly popular adaptation of an epic journey of hope and endurance.

Lolita Chakrabarti’s Olivier Award-winning show is based on Yann Martel’s best-selling novel Life of Pi and now, having stunned the West End with puppets and grand spectacle, it’s dropping by Bristol for a five-date stint as part of a massive tour of the UK and Ireland.

When a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, five survivors are left stranded on a single lifeboat. The survivors are sixteen-year-old Pi Patel, a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a 450-pound Royal Bengal Tiger. Time is against them, and conditions are worsening – who will survive?

During the story, these animals become characters in their own right and, in Chakrabarti’s award-winning production, they are brought to life by Puppet and Movement Director Fin Caldwell, the brain behind the National Theatre’s War Horse.

The production has won five Olivier Awards: Best New Play, Best Actor for Hiran Abeysekera (Pi), Best Actor in a Supporting Role for all seven puppeteers behind ‘Richard Parker’ the Tiger and awards for set and lighting design. It also won big at this year’s Tony Awards, taking home Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design.

As well as Bristol, the Life of Pi UK and Ireland tour is scheduled to drop by theatres in Salford, Leeds, Newcastle, Aberdeen, Birmingham, Belfast, Dublin, Plymouth, Leicester, Bromley, Hull, Northampton, Nottingham, Wolverhampton, Liverpool, Shrewsbury, Southampton, Truro, Cheltenham, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
