National treasure to appear as Herod in award-winning musical Jesus Christ Superstar

Organisers have announced that TV icon Julian Clary will play Herrod in this Olivier Award-winning reimagining of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical.

 

Jesus Christ Superstar runs at The Bristol Hippodrome from Thursday 14 to Saturday 16 March 2024.

 

Clary’s Herrod joins the lead cast of Ian McIntosh (Jesus), Shem Omari James (Judas) and Hannah Richardson (Mary). On the role, the celebrated comedian said: “I am thrilled to be reunited with this wonderful production again. My Herod – Sally Bowles meets Captain Hook – has been missing the amazing, talented cast and the standing ovations.”

Jesus Christ Superstar is a global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for decades with an iconic 70s rock score featuring lyrics and music from Emmy, GRAMMY, Oscar and Tony Winners Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

 

The original production ran for 8 years and 3,358 performances, becoming the longest running musical in West End history at the time. Since its first the show has been reproduced all over the world, including a Broadway revival in 2012 and an ITV competition show dubbed Superstar with the winner, Ben Forster, playing Jesus in an arena tour.

 

This current production, which will be journeying around the UK on tour in 2024, was reimagined by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre where it debuted to celebrate 45 years since the musical’s Broadway debut. It is helmed by director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie.

 

Set against the backdrop of the extraordinary story of Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ Superstar takes the point of view of Judas whilst reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation including legendary hits ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’, ‘Gethsemane’ and ‘Superstar’.

 

The Jesus Christ Superstar 2024 UK tour will drop by venues in Nottingham, Ipswich, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leicester, Stoke, Bromley, Inverness, Bristol, Crawley, Southampton, Swansea, Norwich, Eastbourne, Birmingham, Truro, Oxford, Wimbledon, Woking, Sunderland, Canterbury, Sheffield, Llandudno, Southend, Torquay, Dartford, Cheltenham and Blackpool.
