A celebrated Irish singer-songwriter is coming to Bristol in April 2024

Posted on: 11 Dec 2023

Those who caught the coverage of the late Shane McGowan’s funeral last week will have been moved by Lisa O’Neil and Glen Hansard’s rendition of ‘Fairytale of New York’ – now the latter has announced a date in Bristol!

Glen Hansard will play St George’s Bristol on Wednesday 10 April 2024.

Presented by Bristol Beacon, the artist – who first gained acclaim as the frontman of Dublin band The Frames - will appear at one of the city’s most beautiful venues next year as part of his acoustic solo tour celebrating his recently released album, All That Was East Is West Of Me Now.

Perhaps best known for starring and scoring the 2007 musical film, Once – for which he won an Oscar for the song ‘Falling Slowly’ – and as the lead singer in The Frames, Glen Hansard has been at the forefront of indie folk for over thirty years.

Founding The Frames in 1990 from a ragtag bunch of Dublin musicians following his signing to Island Records, the band quickly developed a fervent following thanks to their prolific output, celebrated live shows and, surprisingly, Hansard’s appearance as Outspan Foster in cult jukebox comedy, The Commitments.

In 2006, Hansard turned his focus to side project, The Swell Season, with collaborator and partner, Czech singer-songwriter Markéta Irglová. It was Irglová who starred alongside Hansard in the 2007 romantic musical, Once – to which the pair also contributed the award-winning score.

Hansard’s latest effort, All That Was East Is West Of Me Now, is his first four years and it will be this record that he will support with his 2024 acoustic tour. Last Friday, he and acclaimed Irish folk singer Lisa O’Neill were joined by members of The Pogues to sing the band’s hit song ‘Fairytale of New York’ at the funeral of their former frontman, Shane McGowan.

In addition to Bristol, Glen Hansard’s upcoming solo tour will see him play shows in Dublin, Galway, Derry, Belfast, Cork, Glasgow, Gateshead, London, Leeds, Bristol, and Brighton. Find out more on the artist’s website.
