Stereo MCs are probably best known for their worldwide hit single ‘Connected’, which was released in 1992 and featured on their album of the same name. That record reached Number Two in the UK Album Charts, also containing such hits as ‘Step It Up’, ‘Creation’ and ‘Ground Level’, leading to the group winning two Brit Awards in ‘94.
Childhood friends, Rob and Nick formed the band in the mid-80s, inspired by a love of hip-hop, funk and electronic music. They pressed their first 12” vinyl and launched their own label called G Street Records with DJ Richie Rich and Jon Baker. When G Streets attracted 3rd & Broadway in ’89, the duo recorded the debut MCs album, 33-45-78.
After releasing the album, they toured with De La Soul, Living Colour and A Certain Ration before heading to New York to record sophomore effort Supernatural in ‘90. Bearing singles ‘Elevate My Mind’ and ‘Lost in Music’, the album was a club hit on both sides of the pond and led to a US support slot with Happy Mondays.
Stereo MCs have also been lauded for their remix work, collaborating with the likes of U2, Madonna, Tricky, RZA and more. Widespread popularity continued throughout the 90s and early 2000s. In recent times, they have moved towards Afro House and worked with house stars including Adam Port, Keinemusik and Stil Vor Talent.
