Visitors are invited to experience the awe-inspiring, seven-metre diameter earth structure that is enhanced by a diverse community engagement programme designed to deepen the connection between art, the environment and science.
Luke Jerram’s ‘Gaia’ is known for its breathtaking realistic depiction of the earth using high-res NASA imagery, the centre-point of an innovative event series, immersing visitors in the planet and inspiring visitors to take environmental action. The programme will feature workshops, panels, live performances and music.
The event series begins with a FREE lunchtime Uni of Bristol Music Society recital on Tuesday 15 October, followed by a panel discussion on sustainability and the concept of ‘home’ on Wednesday 23 October, and a creative craft workshop led by We The Curious on Saturday 19 October.
Throughout the four-week programme, the cathedral will host ‘Crafty Cathedral’ with eco-project sessions for children, with hands-on activities for the whole family. An atmospheric twist will be the ‘Up Lates’ Friday music series, with live music ranging from jazz to global roots to electronica.
The standout event of the series will be a Blue Planet concert on Thursday 24 with the Bristol Ensemble performing the evocative soundtrack of David Attenborough’s iconic series, perfectly synchronised with Gaia’s rotations. This promises to be a truly unique and emotional journey through sound and visual artistry.
‘Gaia’ will also provide a thought-provoking backdrop to Sustainable Fashion Week on Wednesday 6 November. Exploring the harmony between harmony and nature, the event will allow guests to meet artists, makers and organisations working towards a better future.
Suspended within the nave of Bristol Cathedral, the fragile beautiful ‘Gaia’ will take over Bristol Cathedral from Tuesday 15 October to Saturday 9 November 2024, offering a new perspective on earth. Find out more here.
