The ‘Aphex Twin of Hip-Hop’ is coming to Bristol indie favourite venue next month
Posted on: 18 Jul 2024This August will see Strange Brew play host to genre-shifting producer & DJ, Hudson Mohawke – described by DJ Pete Tong as “doing for hip-hop what the Aphex Twin did for techno”.
Hailing from Glasgow, Hudson Mohawke (aka Ross Birchard) is a secret darling of the music world – an iconic DJ and producer who’s had a hand in producing tracks for some of the biggest artists in the hip-hop world and beyond.
While you might best know him for the meme-y popularity of his song “Cbat” (which became widespread after an infamous internet post that described the song’s somewhat deleterious effects on their relationship), Mohawke is a powerful force in music far beyond that, having worked with artists like A$AP Rocky, Drake, Pusha T – and Kanye West.
In particular, it was signing with West’s G.O.O.D Music production team that catapulted him into the truly big leagues – contributing to 2013’s Yeezus among other projects. Under his collaborative project TNGHT with Canadian producer Lunice, he’s also credited as one of the leading figures behind the creation of the trap genre.
Hudson Mohawke has been described in favourable terms by a number of public figures – notably, legendary Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong, upon playing Mohawke’s debut Essential Mix described him as “doing for hip-hop what the Aphex Twin did for techno”. Similarly, Charli XCX sings “I wanna dance to HudMo” on the song Club Classics from her album ‘Brat’ – which Mohawke produced two of the songs on.
Now, Hudson Mohawke is coming to Bristol – he’ll be visiting Strange Brew this coming August, Friday 23. For tickets, head here.
This is Mohawke’s first visit to Bristol in eight years – so prepare for a once-in-a-decade (or near enough) chance to experience his uniquely genre-smashing music, from turntablist jitter to euphoric trap-hop. Best of all, you can catch Mohawke in the equally hot, genre-shifting indie darling venue Strange Brew.
Hudson Mohawke comes to Strange Brew on Friday 23 August. For tickets, go to Headfirst.
