Celebrate the legacy of a writer & civil rights activist this July
Posted on: 28 Jun 2024Next month, the Bristol Beacon are hosting Conversations with Baldwin: a day-long programme of poetry, workshops and performance from incredible artists celebrating the life and work of James Baldwin.
This July, Conversations with Baldwin, an event celebrating the legacy of James Baldwin, writer and civil rights activist is coming to Bristol Beacon. James Baldwin was an American writer & civil rights activist who intertwined intersectional themes like race, sexuality, masculinity & class with socially significant historical and cultural events to create a compelling snapshot of the world we live in – and to hold it up to hard scrutiny with an open heart and passionate soul.
The event sees a whole day of activities, including a free book club session with Baldwin curator Heather Marks and a writers workshop with the T.S Eliot prize-winning poet Roger Robinson, focused on working with writers from the global majority.Conversations with Baldwin will be at the Bristol Beacon for the day of Saturday 27 July. Tickets are available from Beacon’s website.
The day will culimnate in the evening event, Conversations with Baldwin: LIVE. Five artists will respond to the theme of ‘the Artist as Witness’, drawing on James Baldwin’s legacy as one of the 20th century’s most revered writer-activists. Artists featured at the event will include poet & playwright Sukina Noor, writer & educator Casey Bailey, and again T.S. Eliot prize-winning poet Roger Robinson.
‘Conversations with Baldwin’ is presented in collaboration by Words of Colour and Raise the Bar, and is part of the wider Conversations with Baldwin festival taking place across the UK which celebrates the 100th birthday of iconic writer James Baldwin.
Conversations with Baldwin takes place this coming month, Saturday 27 July. The writer’s workshop, book club and evening event are all ticketed separately. For information on the event as a whole, head here.
