The wonderfully weird, near-mythic legends of 80s and 90s psychedelic rock, The Flaming Lips, are coming to Bristol to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their seminal album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

The Flaming Lips are true legends, both in the world of psychedelic rock, and the wider world of music at large – going strong from 1983 until today, they are a strange and powerful force to be reckoned with, and a rare treat to see live.

In 2002, the Flaming Lips released Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots – the band’s first RIAA certified Gold record. The album was named for the band’s collaboration with Japanese musician Yoshimi P-We, whose vocal style was once described as sounding like she was battling monsters.

As the eagerly awaited follow-up to 1999’s masterwork, The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi proved that singer/guitarist Wayne Coyne, and multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd had yet another masterpiece in them. A diverse and complex album that at once is considered both a concept album and not, it marked a significant change in the sound of the Lips – and drew widespread critical acclaim.

Now, just over 20 years later, the band are celebrating the anniversary of the adored album with a tour spanning the UK & Ireland, from Dublin, to Leeds, Manchester and – of course – Bristol. The Flaming Lips will be visiting our very own Bristol Beacon to perform a very special show next year, May 5. Tickets for the gig go on pre-sale tomorrow (Thursday 6 June) with general sale this Friday, 7 June.

This is a celebration of a sci-fi-themed quasi-concept album that cast The Flaming Lips’ most playful and profound songs to date in a wondrous swirl of ambient electronics, digital beats, and psychedelic splendor – a hypnotising sonic spectacle whose appeal increases tenfold when witnessed live and in person.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance – not a gig to be missed. As a reminder, tickets go on pre-sale tomorrow, and general sale this Friday. To score your tickets to The Flaming Lips’ 20th anniversary celebration of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, head to the Bristol Beacon website.
