Cutting-edge Bristol fringe comedy venue announces summer season

Posted on: 29 Apr 2024

The Room Above, one of the strongest fringe comedy venues in Bristol, have announced their brand new summer season – as well as a venue change.

The Room Above is a comedy venue situated in the former site of the Wardrobe Theatre – the room above (get it?) The White Bear on St. Michael’s Hill. Since their inception, they’ve been working hard to provide Bristol with some of the freshest and best stand-up and improv Bristol and beyond has to offer – and they’re showing no signs of slowing.

Now, the Room Above have announced their new summer season; and it is (predictably) chock full of great comedy. That said, it’s also worth noting that due to a change in fire safety assessment, the Room Above have had to reduce their capacity. Thus, most shows will (regardless of previous announcements) be going forward at their sister venue in Basement 45.

As for the summer announcements, however, get excited. To begin with, just next month, comedy stars Maisie Adam and Suzi Ruffell will bring their award-winning podcast, Big Kick Energy, to Bristol Folk House in collaboration with the Room Above. Covering the beautiful game of women’s football, from the highs and lows of supporting their local team, Brighton, to hanging out with the Lionesses, Maisie and Suzi are ready to bring their big podcast energy to a live audience.

The Room Above’s commitment to alternative and varied comedy continues with BANGTAIL on June 6 – the brainchild of award-nominated clown Lil Wenker, this cowboy drag clowning show sees the Baddest Cowboy in Texas, Bangtail, search for his manhood, take on his rival, and … journey to the American office?

Of course, top-quality standup is the Room Above’s bread-and-butter – and they haven’t forgotten it in this programme. Just a few highlights of that standup include rising talent Elliot Steel on 6 July – marked as ‘one to watch’ by the independent, and appearing across radio, the Fringe, and other comedy festivals. Beyond that, there’s also multi-award winning comedians (and duo TikTok/Instagram stars) Ed Nights & Paddy Young doing a double bill of fresh material, and local big-name talent Dani Johns with her interactive show Cringe.

That’s just a sliver of what’s on at the Room Above – there’s countless re-visits from beloved regulars like Ted Hill, Adam Flood and Horatio Gould, theatre shows like Taken Spaces, and the Room Above’s regular programming of beloved recurring shows like the White Bear Comedy Club, Bristol Comedy Room, Bristol Comedy Cave, Honeypot Comedy, Improv Allstars, Supernormal Comedy, and the queer comedy night Out Jokes.
