The original Matthew was the caravel sailed by Italian navigator and explorer John Cabot from Bristol harbourside to Newfoundland in 1497, North America on a journey that was originally supposed to end in Asia. To celebrate the voyage’s 500th anniversary, a replica was built and moored at Bristol’s historic harbourside before recreating the original journey, being welcomed by Queen Elizabeth II at Bonavista where there is also a second replica.

Still located at Bristol Harbourside, The Matthew offers visitors a whole range of exciting trips around the city as well as a glimpse into the city’s rich nautical history.
