Bristol Beacon is hosting an event exploring the art of the newly transformed venue

Posted on: 12 Apr 2024

On Monday, a roster of acclaimed artists whose work features at the heart of the Beacon transformation will join curator Theresa Bergne for a very special event.

‘The Art of the Beacon’ will take place at Bristol Beacon’s Lantern Hall on Monday 15 April 2024.

This evening of presentations and discussion on the creative process of developing art commissions for the building will pose such questions as how did the artists respond to the brief to ‘bring music to life in visual form’ and to respond to the site’s history? What were the challenges? And how does this work differ from usual creative practice?

Tickets for this event are still available and can be found here.

Using a wide range of materials from textiles, ceramics bronze and even sound, these immensely talented creatives have created a series of artworks that enhance the significant civic building that is Bristol Beacon.

As visitors enter Beacon’s performance spaces, their eyes will be greeted with tapestries and seat covers created by Rana Begum. Known for merging sculpture, painting and architecture, her textiles bring a sense of movement to Beacon hall with shifting colours and patterns.

When approaching Bristol Beacon from the City Centre, Linda Brothwell’s beautiful bronze sculpture ‘Motion Efficiency Study’ can clearly be seen, elegantly twisting across the building’s frontage – a flowing ribbon of metal that dances across the threshold.

The lower level of The Lantern Foyer has been brought to life thanks to the vibrancy of Giles Round’s opulent installation, using geometric tiles, stone and terrazzo. Taking inspiration from the Bristol Byzantine style, integrating with exquisitely crafted material.

If you can’t make it to this special event, why not embark on one of the venue’s The Art of the Beacon Tours? While the ‘Curator Tour’ in May led by Theresa Bergne is sold out, a ‘Parent and Baby Tour’ will take place on Thursday 25 April.
