Lambchop and Silver Jews collaborator brings ‘cosmic country’ to Bristol later this year

Tenesee-born singer, songwriter, producer – and frequent collaborator with Kurt Wagner’s Lambchop – William Tyler will be coming to the Beacon this September.

William Tyler is one of the secret beating hearts of country – born in Nashville, Tennessee itself, he’s the son of noted songwriter Dan Tyler (who had written songs for, among others, LeAnn Rimes, and The Oak Ridge Boys), and Adele B Tyler – owners of music bar The Stone Fox. With such a musical pedigree, it’s perhaps unsurprising that he turned out as such a powerhouse of country songwriting and innovation.

Tyler got his start with not just one, but two, legendary bands – both David Berman’s wonderfully dry, genre-blending Silver Jews and Kurt Wagner’s iconic country outfit Lambchop (which he joined at just 19). These days, however, he’s a legend in his own right, having released three critically acclaimed albums, and working behind the scenes as a producer with artists like Mary J Blige on songs such as Strength of A Woman.

Now, William Tyler is coming for a rare visit to our shores – swinging by the Bristol Beacon with his unique style of ‘cosmic country’ on Wednesday 11 September.

Tyler’s style of instrumental, experimental guitar sets itself apart from the country crowd with extended, psychedelic country compositions that blend a variety of genres from the lo-fi alt indie country rock of his youth to American primitive fingerstyle, and pure folk.

His universally acclaimed debut album Behold the Spirit was described by Pitchfork as having “spry melodies and generous arrangements ... the stuff of pop fantasy” and his third full length album, Modern Country, was named by Rolling Stone as one of the best country albums of 2016.

William Tyler will be performing in Beacon’s Lantern Hall, the largest of Beacon’s spaces, this September – Wednesday 11 September, from 20:00. Tickets are on sale now, and you can find them here.
